State officials work to combat drug overdoses

WVDII

Health and law enforcement officials across the state have been working to combat drug overdoses — especially those caused by opioids like fentanyl.

Saturday marks International Overdose Awareness Day, and health officials took a pause to remember those who have died from overdoses and to renew their commitment to end overdoses.

Dr. Edward Simmer, interim director of the state Department of Public Health (DPH), also addressed the stigma around substance use disorders.

“Sadly, many across our state have felt the pain of the loss of a loved one from an overdose,” he said. “By working together, we can reduce the stigma around substance use disorders and raise awareness and access to the education, testing and treatment needed to save the lives and prevent future overdoses.”
