Around 1 a.m. on May 20, police officers with Metro’s Entertainment District Unit responded to a call for several people in need of medical attention underneath the pedestrian bridge south of Lower Broadway. When they arrived, they encountered a mass overdose. Eight unhoused people were in various stages of succumbing to a toxic amount of a yet unknown poison. Police later concluded they’d been sold crack cocaine, likely laced with the highly potent synthetic opioid fentanyl.
